The closest relevant clinical example found in the checked literature involved a plant-based balm used on sled-dog footpads during intensive training. It did not test the specific beeswax, shea-butter, and calendula formula discussed in this article, and the abstract did not establish a DRE or PBIS score.
In the study, 52 sled dogs were divided into two groups. One group received balm on all feet; the other received balm on right footpads while left footpads served as controls. The product was applied before and after daily runs of 15 to 50 kilometers for 15 consecutive days. Among the control-group observations, erythema or abrasions occurred in 7.3% of treated footpads compared with 14.1% of untreated footpads, while cracks occurred in 0.5% of treated pads compared with 2.3% of untreated pads. The authors reported a lower overall risk of erythema or abrasion with treatment and stated that the balm was well tolerated in the study.
A related analysis included 30 dogs and compared 60 treated pads with 60 untreated pads. Of the pads with erythema or abrasions, 93.7% of treated pads healed compared with 42.1% of untreated pads. Among dogs with lesions on both sides, 14 of 15 treated pads healed faster than their untreated counterparts.
